The Menzies Global and Tropical Health (GTH) Division is committed to tackling key areas of public health concern that impact on the health and wellbeing of people and communities across northern Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. With a focus on translational research we shape our research program through close collaboration with a diverse range of healthcare providers, policy makers and researchers, to target priority health issues. Our aim is to find meaningful and relevant ways to improve the health of people in our region.
Menzies has recently opened an office in Dili, Timor-Leste. The Timor-Leste office will manage two main projects, STRONG TL and the Fleming Fund Country Grant for Timor-Leste with other smaller projects and partnerships running concurrently.
STRONG TL (Surveillance Training, Research Opportunities and National Guidelines for communicable disease control in Timor-Leste) will address key health system needs (surveillance, research and guidelines) to build capacity to manage Timor-Leste’s burden of communicable diseases. The focus of the Fleming Fund Country Grant for Timor-Leste is to strengthen antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU) surveillance systems and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) data capture through building laboratory and clinical capacity in both the human and animal health sectors. The project will facilitate a stronger One Health approach to surveillance, bringing together multi-sectoral stakeholders to share surveillance data and gain a better understanding of AMR, AMU and AMC.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Laboratory scientist will support Menzies’ work within the bacteriology department of the National Health Laboratory (NHL) with a focus on AMR activities. They will work closely with all staff and contribute to routine microbiology testing, data collection, addressing quality control issues, assisting with the development of guidelines and protocols, and supporting capacity building and training for laboratory scientists within NHL.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Essential:
- Relevant qualification in medical laboratory science and relevant experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory
- Fluent in English and Tetum.
- Proven ability to establish and develop productive partnerships, manage sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong communication, negotiation and liaison skills
- Initiative, good judgement and strong problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently without direct supervision, under broad direction and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience of maintaining good organisational and time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines
- Hold or be able to obtain a National Police Clearance certificate

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Biosafety officer will work within the bacteriology department of the National Health Laboratory (NHL) and promote safe microbiological practices, procedures and proper use of containment equipment in this Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) laboratory. The Biosafety officer will also work together with the Veterinary Laboratory Scientist mentor to provide support to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) as required.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Essential:
- Tertiary qualification in medical laboratory science
- Postgraduate qualification in science or health
- Experience working in microbiology and biosafety in Timor-Leste
- Experience in teaching and training
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Tetum
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and educational backgrounds
- Demonstrated initiative, good judgement and strong problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently without direct supervision, under broad direction and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience of maintaining good organisational and time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines
