Community Development Mentor
Dili

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Project

Estacao Missionaria Nain, Feto do Rozario de Ramelau is a co-educational secondary school in Hatubuilico, Timor-Leste. The Parish Priest, Fr Francisco Fernandez and the parish and school community have requested a Secondary Teacher/Mentor and a Community Development Mentor.

Note: The monthly living allowance enables you to live a modest local lifestyle. Based on the cost of living in a particular country, it covers food, your daily commute, communication and other local costs. It is not set to enable you to meet financial commitments at home, such as a mortgage or a personal loan. It will not cover the costs of eating out and other entertainment. Read more about what is covered in our FAQ. All applicants will be required to complete a Working with Children and Police Check.

The Location

Sitting 1917m above sea level, Hatubuilico is a remote rural community located approximately 8km from Mt Ramelau, at the centre of the mountainous interior of Timor-Leste. Mt Ramelau is Timor-Leste’s highest peak and also a site of deep religious and cultural significance, approximately 75km south of Dili. On a clear day, glimpses of the fantastic Kablaki Range can be seen, where many Timorese took refuge in the years following the 1976 Indonesian invasion, until they were found by the Indonesian army. Hatubuilico is within the District of Ainaro, with a population of approximately 12,000 people. The vast majority of this population are subsistence farmers.

The Challenge

  • Timor-Leste has a 58% literacy rate, placing it among the same rates as countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • About half of Timor-Leste’s population live below the poverty line, and 70% live in rural areas, where poverty rates are higher than in urban centres.
  • Tetum and Portuguese are the two official languages of Timor-Leste, however Indonesian and English are also taught as important working languages.
  • Hatubuilico is a rural, remote location with limited infrastructure, including challenging roads during the wet season.
Rural areas are often the least supported by aid or development assistance. Their isolation often makes it difficult to access opportunities that come much more easily to those living in urban areas. With little infrastructure in the rural mountainous area, the Parish hopes both mentors will bring much needed skills and knowledge to this area.

About You

The Parish of Hatubuilico have requested a community development mentor to help build the professional capacity of local community programs.

The candidate will live and work at Estacao Missionaria Nain, Feto do Rozario de Ramelau in Hatubuilico for 12-24 months. The Community Development Mentor will work alongside and mentor key local community members, establishing networks that will assist with development programs in agriculture, health, and education for this rural community.

The volunteer must also demonstrate a willingness to engage their Australian community in promoting the work of the host organisation and their role.

How You Will Help

Improved community development skills and knowledge will further develop networking opportunities and open up new possibilities for local income generating initiatives.
