Based on the cost of living in a particular country, it covers food, your daily commute, communication and other local costs. It is not set to enable you to meet financial commitments at home, such as a mortgage or a personal loan. It will not cover the costs of eating out and other entertainment. Read more about what is covered in our FAQ. All applicants will be required to complete a Working with Children and Police Check.
The Location
Sitting 1917m above sea level, Hatubuilico is a remote rural community located approximately 8km from Mt Ramelau, at the centre of the mountainous interior of Timor-Leste. Mt Ramelau is Timor-Leste’s highest peak and also a site of deep religious and cultural significance, approximately 75km south of Dili. On a clear day, glimpses of the fantastic Kablaki Range can be seen, where many Timorese took refuge in the years following the 1976 Indonesian invasion, until they were found by the Indonesian army. Hatubuilico is within the District of Ainaro, with a population of approximately 12,000 people. The vast majority of this population are subsistence farmers.
The Challenge
- Timor-Leste has a 58% literacy rate, placing it among the same rates as countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
- About half of Timor-Leste’s population live below the poverty line, and 70% live in rural areas, where poverty rates are higher than in urban centres.
- Tetum and Portuguese are the two official languages of Timor-Leste, however Indonesian and English are also taught as important working languages.
- Hatubuilico is a rural, remote location with limited infrastructure, including challenging roads during the wet season.
